They trigger at varying points, have wire resistors in the base plate, and the coils interconnect in strange and puzzling ways. Here is the untouched regular, perhaps even original, from Isabelle:
I'm putting in a one-wire alternator that has a built-in regulator. I won't need this. Here you can see the Delco-Remy mark:
