Besides the center post, the next important piece is the back. It needs to be sturdy and square. I cut off some of the side rail to fit a vertical 2X4 in:
I ran a 2X6 across the top and put another 2X4 underneath aligned with the new vertical 2X4:
What we want is something sturdy and square to screw some plywood in to. Here is how the corner looks:

Once I have boards on all four sides, where the opposite sides are the same length, all I have to do is hold up a level and shove the top until it is square:
