Now, here is why things are so difficult for me and the alternator. The upper bolt is broken off in the block (no, I didn't do it), so the bracket can only attach at the bottom. I had to grind a bit to get it to fit flat:

The bottom of the alternator pivots and is bolted to the end of the exhaust manifold. It is fairly stable. The bracket kind of hold the top bar in place.

Really, with the new chrome bracket that I ground, and the new alternator, it feels more stable and the belt is tight. As long as the water pump doesn't leak at the top, all should be fine.
